Scope and Contents

This collection includes correspondence,coursework, biographical information and account books of Minerva E. Leland. The bulk of the collection consists of letters written by Leland to various correspondents btween 1867 and 1905. The collection also contains materials belonging to friends and relatives of Leland, such as letters and account books.

Biographical / Historical

Minerva Eliza Leland (1859-1943) of Newton Lower Falls, achieved note as a High School teacher and alumni of both Colby College and Harvard. The daughter of school teacher, Luther E. Leland and Mrs. Ellen M. Leland, she received her collegial education at Colby College, formerly known as Colby University, where she graduated with a Master of Science degree. Throughout her years at Colby, Leland was a member of Sigma Kappa, the college's first female sorority. In addition, her various works never failed to reflect her high intellect. Leland was the middle child of two siblings, her older brother, Samuel Leland, and her younger brother, Waldo G. Leland. She never married, and lived ost of her life in her home town, Newton Lower Falls, MA.
